Common HTTP response codes

If you’re setting up a website or just trying to find out more information about server response codes, here’s a quick roundup about what they mean and a breakdown of the owns that matter the most.

1xx – Informational

Request received, continuing process.

2xx – Success

The server is telling that the request initiated by the client was received, understood, accepted and processed accordingly. The most common is 200 OK.

3xx – Redirection

Indicates the client will have to take an additional action to complete the request. The most common and used is 301 – Permanent Redirect.

4xx – Client Error

Used in situations where the client seems to have generated an error. Common error codes are 400 Bad Request and, 403 Forbidden and 404 Not Found

5xx – Server Error

The server was not able to complete what seems to be a valid request from the client. The most common are 500 Internal Server Error and 502 Bad Gateway
